In March 2026, engineers removed a 500-metre fatberg from sewers near Heathrow, roughly the length of 600 suitcases laid end to end. Thames Water spent over two weeks breaking it down with specialist excavation tools before high-pressure jets could clear the remaining debris. London has form here. The bill, and who pays it
Someone has to remove a fatberg, and it's rarely simple. Crews work in cramped, hazardous conditions, using shovels, jets and specialist cutting tools to break the mass apart piece by piece, sometimes over weeks.
Water companies say fatbergs cost them around £200 million a year to clear nationally. Independent estimates put the wider cost of clearing the roughly 300,000 sewer blockages recorded across the UK each year at up to £100 million annually, with fats, oils and grease alone contributing to more than 20,000 blockages a year on the Thames Water network, linked to over 60% of sewer flooding incidents.
That cost doesn't fall on the water company's shareholders. It's built into everyone's water bill, whether you've ever flushed a wipe or not.
If it isn't caught in time
Not every wipe makes it into a tidy underground fatberg. Some cause smaller, local blockages that back up into homes, flooding the very bathroom the wipe was flushed from. Some slip through treatment works and out into rivers and onto beaches. Marine conservation surveys have recorded a steep rise in wipes found on UK coastlines over the past two decades, evidence that not everything flushed stays underground.
Even wipes that do eventually break down don't vanish cleanly. Most contain plastic fibres that persist as microplastics long after the wipe itself is no longer recognisable, working their way into waterways and, eventually, the sea.
Why "flushable" never meant what you thought
None of this happens because people are being careless. It happens because a wipe that says "flushable" on the packet was only ever tested for one thing: whether it's slim enough to physically get around a U-bend. Nothing on the label tells you what happens for the following ten miles.
